Frequently Asked Questions

Need some questions answered? We’re on hand to help!

How accurate are NIPT tests?

Please view the product brochures for the NIPT tests for individual accuracy. They can be found at the bottom of each NIPT product page.

All of our NIPT tests have an accuracy rate of >99%.

How is the sample taken?

A simple 10ml blood sample is taken from your arm by a healthcare professional – the expectant mother from a minimum of 10 weeks of pregnancy. If the sample is collected before 10 weeks then it is highly likely that the results will be inconclusive

What is the current method of screening?

Currently most healthcare systems offer pregnant women the combined test which includes a fetal ultrasound and blood test performed at about 11-13 weeks into your pregnancy. The ultrasound looks at multiple aspects of the developing fetus, but particularly at the skin fold at the top of the spine where it meets the skull, this is called the Nuchal Translucency (NT). The blood test measures the levels of two hormones: hCG and PAPP-A. The current combined test has a ~85% detection rate and ~5% false positive rate.

Does the NIPT test replace the need for the 11-13 week dating scan?

No, it is recommended that you still have this dating scan at 11-13 weeks to assess the baby’s growth and development. The NIPT test will not replace this dating ultrasound.

Are the NIPT tests 100% conclusive?

It is not 100% conclusive due to naturally occurring biological instances where the fetal DNA differs from the placental DNA. Please see individual test for accuracy rates.

How long will it take to get the results?

Once the sample is received at the laboratory it will take5 – 7 working days* from the sample arriving in the laboratory to perform the test, depending on which test you choose. As this is a scientific process, in certain cases this process will be longer. The data from the laboratory test is entered into the NIPT analysis software and an easy to interpret result report is generated for you to discuss with your healthcare professional.

*Blood samples collected over the weekend will be despatched to the laboratory on the next working day.

We are only able to deliver the results to the client that we have taken the blood sample from and named on the consent form.

No Result:Very occasionally there is insufficient placental DNA in the sample to obtain a result. In these cases we may need to call you back in order take a further blood sample thus delaying the results.

What are my options if I have a high risk result for a trisomy?

If you get a “high risk” result, you willneed to contact your consultant or midwife.

All high-riskresults should be confirmed by a follow-up invasive procedure, such as amniocentesis or Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) which your Healthcare Provider will arrange on your behalf.

Can I have an NIPT test if I am pregnant with twins?

The NIPT tests are suitable for twin pregnancies. However, in dichorionic twins*, the test sensitivity is reduced from >99% to about 95%.

Dichorionic means there are two placentas, such as non-identical twins and some identical twins.

We are unable to provide gender identification in dichorionic twins.

Can I return a postal kit?

Please click here to read our returns policy for any test kits purchased via our website – our refund policy is contained within Returns Policy.
